IMPORTANT! Erwin Miyasaka: Japanese Language, What You Should Know About It

Why is it going to be a nice idea to go to Japan? If you are able to go to Japan, you will definitely learn a lot of expressions in Japanese. Thin is everything but a language that can e related to almost any other. 

 It is kid of similar to English and Chinese but other than that, you do not really have that much reference. It is a language that you will need to practice over and over but it is going to be interesting and you will be likely to learn more easily if you are in Japan. 

 Sure, there are many embassies around the world that will offer great lessons. However, there is nothing like the face to face experience that you get when you are talking to a person that come from the place where the language is spoken.

Japanese is interesting and it will surely improve your memory. Remember that there are about 5000 different kanji. If you are able to learn at least 500 of them, you will be able to read most newspapers and information signposts as you go to Japan. However, if you want to go further than that, you may need at least 2000 kanji to succeed.

Japanese songs may help you out to learn some words and Japanese dramas are pretty much going to do the same.

 If you want to improve your Japanese vocabulary, it would also advisable to follow YouTube videos.  Just search “Japanese vocabulary”, “Japanese Tango”, “Kanji for newcomers” or the like.

 Remember that Japanese will also imply learning hiragana and katakana, the two basic systems that Japanese use to communicate.

 Katakana is used often with words from other languages while hiragana is used for Japanese words. Try to learn as much as you can and you will make it!

Since someone asked me if Qing women went to opium dens, I thought I would answer and put up some of my evidence. Short answer – I don’t think so, at least as customers. Certainly in the Republic, when they started registering opium “addicts” only a very small number of women registered (although their seem to have been women registered everywhere) In Qing pictures, like the ones below, opium smoking places seem to be male spaces, although we do get a picture of a wife showing up at one looking for her husband. There seem to be female attendants/possible prostitutes smoking with men in the classier place. I also include the picture of Mr. Conspicuous Consumption, which students always like. Erwin Miyasaka: Who are the shi?

Since I am teaching Early China this semester, I am drawing from Yuri Pines, Envisioning Eternal Empire: Chinese Political Thought of the Warring States Period (University of Hawaii Press, 2009) Pines points out a really good story to use in teaching about who the shi， 士 were. They were, of course the new class of literate experts who started running China in the Warring States. In 1910 China was still being run by people who called themselves shi , although the social class referred to had of course changed a lot. Erwin Miyasaka: 24 Hour Hot Menu Vending machine

After the Cup Noodle vending machine , I found another very useful Japanese vending machine, also serving hot food, called “24 Hour Hot Menu". It serves yaki onigiri (grilled onigiri ), yakisoba , takoyaki , and a couple of Western dishes, fried potato and hot dog.
