Erwin Miyasaka: Old Japanese stories, the legend of the Gogan-ji red wall
It is said that after the battle between the troops of Kuroda Kanbei, who was just named lord of the Nakatsu castle and the retainers of the former lord, Utsunomiya Shigefusa, the wall of the Gogan-ji temple was stained by blood.
Although it was restored with white plaster several times, the bloodstains reappeared every time. Then, the baffled monks decided to paint the wall red, and it remained like this until today…
