Erwin Miyasaka: Shintokudo, the old samurai school of Obi

During the Edo period in many feudal domains (han in Japanese) were established schools (hanko) to provide education for the children of the samurai. One of the very few such schools that remained until today is Shintokudo, built in Obi, in today’s Miyazaki prefecture in Kyushu.

Constructed in 1831, this small hanko is still in its original form, and after a period of use as kindergarten, it is today a museum.
